TALKS Youth Mentoring: Youth transforming through building relationships
In this program, young people are paired with adult volunteers (some of whom are DePauw students) through their county schools and meet weekly in a structured program to increase professional skills. The goal is greater success in their schooling, which can yield greater success in their future jobs and in service to their community, a “future story.” Soft skills such as interpersonal communications, goal setting and working towards them, and discussions of their dreams for the future and how to best achieve that through positive personal habits and taking the right next steps.
Research has shown that students who go through TALKS mentoring improve school attendance, raise grades, and reduce behavior incidents in school.
