Current Condition of the Gobin Organ Reynolds Associates of Marion, Indiana has conducted a full assessment of the current condition of the Gobin organ. Their report concludes that the original mechanical structure of the Gobin Pipe Organ is intact, but decades of use and previous alternations have adversely affected the organ’s overall performance. Today, over one quarter of the organ no longer works. After 78 years, the organ suffers from the lack of airtight windchests which create uneven responses with some notes which play slowly or not at all, and others which play unexpectedly. Damage to the original pipework and multiple missing pipes have resulted in dead notes, unexpected tones, and several unusable stops. Electromagnets that control the actions of the windchests in the organ are either failing or missing, resulting in several inoperative sections of the organ. A compromised section of the blower system causes low performance of the reed pipes. The tremulant units in the organ are in poor condition due to age, resulting in inadequate air pressure for proper sounding of the pipes. Dirty pipes, deteriorated reed stops, worn out leather pouches and valves, and walls that block sound from some pipes all contribute to loss of tone quality. The current console is damaged and worn from age. Alterations over the past sixty years have affected the organ’s tone quality; removing these previous alterations and restoring the organ to its original configuration will return the organ to its former glory. |
